The graduate students saw the BMW dump a dog out of the vehicle around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at the intersection of Wadsworth and Amherst Streets, Cambridge police say. The vehicle nearly hit three of the students as they attempted to remove the dog from the street.
The BMW's operator drove off, and the grad students flagged down police to report the incident.
Police determined that a teenaged boy had stolen the BMW, with the dog still inside, from a TJ Maxx parking lot in Brookline about half an hour prior, according to a statement from Brookline and Cambridge police departments.
The car thief's description matched that of a Cambridge teenager who was arrested for a carjacking in Medford in February. He was located and arrested by police the morning of Wednesday, March 15.
The teenager is charged with the following:
- Larceny of a motor vehicle and larceny over $1,200
- Middlesex Juvenile Court
- Receiving a stolen motor vehicle
- Receiving stolen property over $1,200
- Number plate violation
The dog's rescuers called the information on the dog's tags turned the pup, named Millie, over to a "very appreciative and emotional owner."
The BMW was later found, unoccupied, just after 5:30 p.m. on Winter Street near the Cambridge Police Department.
Cambridge police expect that more charges will follow for the teenager.
